Canberra Short Film Festival 2005

The Canberra Short Film Festival is a national short film competition open to all short filmmakers in Australia. The festival will be held over 21 - 23 October 2005 at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra.

There are four competitions: National, Canberra, Youth (25 & Under) and Youth (Schools). There are cash prizes in each category.

Ticketing information for the film screenings will be announced closer to the screening dates. Concessions and Season Tickets will be available.

The closing date for submissions is: Thursday September 1st 2005.

Entering Your Film

The festival must receive films by Thursday September 1st 2005. Judging takes place immediately, so unfortunately late entries cannot be accepted.

There are four competitions held during the festival:

The National Competition

This competition is open to all films of less than 30 minutes duration in any genre made by Australian residents (Director and Producer must be Australian residents). The prize of $2,000 cash is given to the Producer of the Best Film (National Category).

The Canberra Competition

This competition is open to all films of less than 30 minutes duration in any genre made by ACT residents (Director and Producer must be ACT residents at time film is produced). The prize of $1,500 cash is given to the Producer of the Best Film (Canberra Category).

The Young Filmmaker Competition (25 & Under)

This competition is open to all films of less than 30 minutes duration in any genre made persons 25 years of age and under (Director and Producer must be 25 or under at time of film's completion). The prize of $1,000 cash is given to the Producer of the Best Film (Youth Category: 25 & Under).

The Young Filmmaker Competition (Schools)

This competition is open to all films of less than 30 minutes duration in any genre made by persons attending Schools (Grade 1-12) (Director and Producer must be school students at time of film's completion). The prize of $750 cash is given to the Producer of the Best Film (Youth Category: Schools).

The festival is made up of four competitive screenings (National, Canberra, Youth (25 & Under) and Youth (Schools), a Director's Choice screening and a Finals Screening. Only films chosen by the Preliminary Panel of Judges to be short-listed or chosen by the Directors for the Director's Choice session will be screened.

To Enter Your Film 

To enter your film for consideration, you need to send: 

  • a VHS/DVD copy of your film 
  • a completed entry form 
  • the appropriate entry fee to:

Please note that preview tapes will not be returned unless you include an appropriately stamped self-addressed envelope.

Preliminary judging will take place immediately following the closing date, so late submissions, unfortunately cannot be accepted.

Sending Master Tapes 

Filmmakers whose films have been selected for screening (either in shortlists or in Director's Choice) will be notified by mid September and will be required to send a master copy of their film. All films must be PAL. Suitable master formats include:  

  • SP Betacam
  • DV Cam 
  • Mini DV
